Very true. I have a friend who is terrified of flying. Absolutely refuses to do it for any reason. Yet, she rockets through the streets and highways of NYC on a 650cc motorcycle without a care in the world. Other friends are so terrified for their child's safety that he has to wear a helmet when he rides his big wheel, is only fed organic food, etc., yet they routinely put him in this little trailer contraption that they tow behind their bicycles through the streets of Brooklyn, where people are killed on bicycles every day. My theory is, even very dangerous activities mostly don't kill you. Therefore, after you've hopped on the motorcycle a few times, and don't wreck, or tow your child through traffic in a stroller that's car-wheel height, and he isn't killed, it starts to seem harmless. But with airplanes, nothing about the experience says, ordinary, quotidian activity. You don't hop on and off the plane several times a day, so it never seems routine. Moreover, it looks completely unnatural for a fifty-ton metal object to fly. Therefore, it requires an act of faith that is less necessary with a bike or a car.
