The obvious question is, how did they protect against survivor bias in coming to this conclusion? This must have been among their most basic considerations in doing the research and it's an interesting problem! (For those who don't know the term, damage to "critical" areas in the genome would, at least some of the time, affect the probability of a mutation ever being detected.)
