Terrific article. But one weakness I wonder about is the unprecedented wild card of global culture and the Internet. People spend an ever shrinking proportion of their time communicating with people who live near them as they are exposed to online and global entertainment. So I wonder if your X is really Spanish speaking Catalonians or is it the world-wide community of Spanish speakers, which is enormously larger?
