I think we're kindred spirits in this area. I'm in despair about where I see young people going. My two sons are in their early 30's and grew up in downtown Brooklyn. Practically everyone they know should be almost genetically liberal. But most of their friends from their youth are either overtly or covertly right wing now. To a man, they feel the left despises them. Progressive America is so committed to dividing the world around race and gender that we don't notice that the rest of the country doesn't buy it. Women vote almost indistinguishably from their male demographic peers. I feel like we tied our fate to the wrong wagon with identity politics. I spent a lot of time in South Jersey a few years ago and it was eye-opening. It was a heavily diverse area, black, white and Hispanic. I was probably the only person within five miles who could spell Hillary Clinton. Everybody was Trump. Race had zero to do with it. It was eye-opening. 100% about class, 0% about race. Working class America hates us like death. It's a tragedy because working class America used to be our peeps. You know what the problem is? They just aren't cool.
