I couldn't agree more. I rode a bike in Brooklyn and Manhattan for years, but finally decided that I was tempting fate. Me on a bike isn't a fair match against a 3,000 pound car or a 30,000 pound truck. Most drivers are doing their best (and can still accidentally kill you) but a significant number actually deliberately run you off the road, attempt to hit you, etc. And even a great driver can suddenly sneeze, get distracted, or be forced into a collision with you. And now that I'm mostly on the car-side of it, I'm terrified of hitting someone on a bike, scooter, moped, unicycle, etc. I find it very odd that people are so blase about cycling and skating in traffic.
